Background: Akira Nishimura was born in 1953 in Osaka. He studied composition and musical theory at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. During this time he also studied Asiatic traditional music religion aesthetics and cosmology all of which have had a lasting influence on his music to the present day. He has won several prizes including the Grand Prix for composition at the Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition in Brussels, the Luigi Dallapiccola Composition Award in Milano and several in Japan.

Ensembles such as the Arditti String Qt & the Kronos Qt have performed his works. Many contemporary music festivals - Vienna, Strasbourg, Brisbane, Oslo, Rouen - have featured his works. Nishimura belongs with the most important contemporary composers today.
