Background: Mendelssohn's octet was the first of its genre and has remained a model of its kind. Each of the eight instruments receives equal treatment except the first violin which is treated more as a concerto soloist & has to contend with the sonorous weight of the seven other instruments. Written in 1825 this majestic and original score demonstrates young Mendelssohn's complete mastery of both chamber music for strings and symphonic writing. Spohr composed his first double concerto in 1823 with the idea of having two quartets sitting close together and playing one piece of music keeping the eight-voice play for the chief parts of the composition only. |
