Background: Joseph Swensen is the soloist in Brahms' stunning violin concerto, directing the orchestra from the violin. A premiere recording of the work performed in this way, it works particularly well with an ensemble of the SCO's size, which corresponds with the orchestral forces used at the work's first performances. Also on the disc are orchestrations of 14 of Brahms' Hungarian Dances. This popular set couples beautifully with the violin concerto, which, like much of Brahms' work, is in the 'Style Hongrois', borrowing heavily from Hungarian and Romanian folk traditions. |
