Background: To the Elizabethans and Jacobeans of early seventeenth-century England, the lute was undoubtedly the most important instrument at all levels of society. It was the principle instrument used to accompany the voice, at court, in the theatre or at home. Amateurs played it for domestic music making; professionals like John Dowland entertained royalty around Europe with their own music composed and performed on the lute. Nigel North was initially inspired by the early 60's pop group The Shadows. He studied classical music via the violin and guitar, discovering his true vocation, the lute, when he was 15. Basically selftaught, he embraces activities as teacher, accompanist, soloist, director and writer. He plays an 8 course Lute by Paul Thomson, Bristol, 1999 and a 9 Course Lute by Paul Thomson, Bristol 1995, both after 17th century models. |
