Background: The monk Otfrid (c. 800-870) who lived in the Alsatian monastery of Weissenburg was one of the most important poets in the time of Charlemagne. His main work is the 'Liber evangeliorum', a transposition of the Bible stories about the life of Jesus taken from the Latin gospels and translated into the South Franconian dialect of Old High German. The texts of the 'Liber evangeliorum' must have also been sung because there are existing passages with 'neume' symbols. It is impossible to reconstruct the exact melodies of these neumes but one can deduce models for the interpretations. Wilfried Rombach has chosen texts around the Nativity of the Lord and with his ensemble officium present different models for the interpretation. |
