Background: Sebastian Knüpfer's professional career lasted only 19 years. He spent all of this time in a single position, that of music director of St Thomas in Leipzig, before his untimely death. During his days as a student, he earned his living as a bass player in the city's main churches.

He must have made a considerable impression, since the city fathers appointed him to the post of Thomaskantor at the tender age of 24,giving him preference over a number of other well-known and more experienced applicants.
