Background: The organ builder Gottfried Silbermann is usually mentioned in connection with Johann Sebastian Bach. The two men were often in close, if not always entirely friendly, contact. The Freiberg organ and instrument builder's work was always of excellent quality and his instruments were highly praised by musicians, who willingly confirmed their 'grace', 'natural tone' and 'silvery touch'. WA Mozart even described them as 'superior, wonderful instruments'. All of these comments refer in the first place to his famous organs but it is a lesser known fact that he also built stringed instruments. Just a few years ago, a harpsichord at Pillnitz Palace near Dresden was finally attributed to Silbermann, one of three preserved clavichords that still survive. |
