Background: Heinrich Isaac's superb six-part 'Missa paschalis' (Easter Mass) is the focal point of this CD by Ensemble Officium. It is an outstanding vocal work of sonorous proportions and demonstrates the high art of polyphonic part-writing by one of the most important composers of the Renaissance. The mass is combined with the proper for Easter Sunday (the verses prescribed for the high feast day) by the same composer. Isaac wrote polyphonic settings of all the sung texts in the mass for all of the Sundays and feast days throughout the church year and compiled them in a great collection. an achievement matched in quality and quantity only by JS Bach's cantatas. This colossal work was commissioned by the dean and chapter of Constance Cathedral and therefore bears the name: 'Choralis Constantinus'. The compositions from the Choralis Constantinus are rarely performed these days, no doubt because of their complexity and the high degree of virtuosity required, and it is therefore quite an achievement by Ensemble Officium to give part of this work, namely the Proper for Easter Sunday, its first commercial recording. |
