Background: Though Charles Koechlin was a hugely prolific and original composer his works were never widely appreciated and indeed most of them were never published in his lifetime. This disc is the first recording of Koechlin's complete works for saxophone. No doubt Koechlin relished the saxophone's ability to adapt its flexible and variable sound to match the other woodwinds. But he seems to have particularly favoured the saxophone's lyricism. The first of the Etudes op.188 may zip along at high speed but most of the others are less concerned with 'technique' than with expressive control of breathing and beauty of sound. |
