Background: Glazunov's Third Symphony reveals a search for a new stylistic identity. It could be described as a pivitol work - one in which the composer makes the transition from his youthful works to those of his artistic maturity. Valeri Polyansky's Chandos recordings have been praised. Various influences on the young composer are discernible: the grace noted embroidering of the first movement's second subject evokes the hallmark of Borodin's melodic charm and there are traces of Wagner's Parsifal in the Scherzo. The waywardness and charm o his Third gives it a special place among his symphonies. |
