Background: In early 1811 Weber struck up a friendship with the great virtuoso clarinettist Heinrich Barmann. Weber was captived by the expressive possibilities of the clarinet. Weber's Concertino was an immediate success and was followed by two more full scale concertos. There seems little doubt that Barmann acquitted himself with distinction at the first performance on 25 November 1811 of these works. 'Godlike' wrote Weber in his diary. The audience he went on to say greeted the works 'with frantic applause'. |
