Background: We still know little about the biographical details of the violinist and composer Antonio Lolli, one of the most extraordinary itinerant virtuosi of the eighteenth century. Active from 1758 at the court of Stuttgart, Lolli became famous through his concert tours in Europe. Analysed in their entirety, the nine concertos that can certainly be attributed to the violinist-composer from Bergamo do not present any particularly marked stylistic evolution. Although the nine concertos presented here do not attain the virtuoso heights of Lolli's Sonatas for violin and basso continuo, the violin writing is nevertheless of great technical difficulty. |
