Background: Agrippina was staged for the first time in late December 1709 or possibly at the beginning of 1710 in Venice. It met with enormous success, sanctioning Handel's confirmation as an operatic composer. Agrippina is a masterpiece of 18th century music and an innovative work. The composer's melodic creativity and remarkable sense of theatre stand out, as does the title character of Veronique Gens in the cast conducted by Jean-Claude Malgoire. |
