Background: This wide-ranging survey of chamber music by British composer Arnold Cooke fills a huge gap in the CD catalogue and includes music written over a span of almost thirty years between 1936 and 1965. The two piano sonatas are big-boned and significant discoveries, while two delightful chamber works, the Rondo for horn and piano and the pawky Flute Quartet, are charming additions to the chamber music repertoire. The programme is rounded out by the delightful Songs of Innocence for soprano, clarinet and piano and the haunting Nocturnes, a cycle of five songs for soprano, horn and piano. |
