Background: The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is made up of orchestral players of the highest international standing. Many of them can be heard not only in the orchestra but also in regular performances of chamber music. After all, the unusual richness of that repertoire is a special challenge for any musician.

In this CD series 'First Chairs of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra', musicians submit their personal calling card, as it were, with their very own choice of music from their particular instrument's repertoire. This is one of the ways that the orchestra can proudly introduce its musicians as individuals.

The first release in the series 'first chairs' is with Jörgen van Rijen who was recently awarded the prestigious Netherlands Music Prize, the highest distinction in the field of music from the Ministry of Culture, presented by the state secretary of culture during a concert given by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, with which he was performing as the soloist in the trombone concerto 'Solo' by Luciano Berio.
