Background: Glazunov decided to become the first major composer of the 20th century to write a saxophone quartet. It was quite remarkable for someone who was known as a traditionalist, his nickname was 'The Russian Brahms', to undertake this bold experiment. In style and form the work is a step back to the nineteenth century. In general it has a pastoral atmosphere and is the 'pièce de résistance' of the saxophone quartet repertoire. On this recording the piece acts as a signpost to the works of the later generations of Russian composers who wrote for this instrumental combination. |
