Background: This powerful recital disc uses music from England and France to express the uncertainty of the period dominated by the two world wars of the 20th Century. England is represented by Britten's powerful Temporal Variations (pre-echoing his War Requiem) and Finzi's expression of Nostalgia, with a lighter offering from Eugene Goossens, written for his brother Leon. This is the debut solo album from a major new presence on the UK oboe scene. American by birth, resident in Britain, Emily Pailthorpe brings an intensity of expression to the works on this CD. In 1989, she was the youngest ever winner of the Gillet International Oboe Competition, where the judges hailed her as 'the Jacqueline du Pre of the oboe'. |
