Background: Egon Wellesz was born in Vienna in 1885. He was a private pupil of Arnold Schoenberg and prior to 1938, was one of the most eminent contemporary composers. During his lifetime, he never regained his pre-war status, despite becoming a professor at Oxford University and receiving numerous honours including the CBE.
