Background: 1670-1738, an itinerant Irish harper and poet, O'Carolan's cultural background was Gaelic, but in the course of his travels he also discovered the music of contemporary Italian composers, including Corelli,Vivaldi and Geminiani. As a result his own pieces are situated somewhere between traditional music and art music. Here Le Concert de l'Hostel Dieu and Garlic Bread bring out the distinctively Irish quality of his music, but also its international flavour; they highlight his references, inspirations, and his moods, from cheerfulness to grief, from nostalgia to the magic of a dream. Music and texts 300 years old, but still with great appeal for us today. |
