Background: Plácido Domingo has been appearing in major roles for probably longer than any other tenor in the whole history of opera. He was a sensational Canio in Pagliacci from La Scala and Covent Garden, to the Metropolitan Opera, New York. This new production from the Vienna State Opera on 5th June 1985 still leaves a profound impression. Domingo was surrounded by a cast equal to the demands of this brief tale of jealousy and betrayal. Ileana Cotrubas is an ideal, feisty Nedda at the very heart of the performance, using her shimmering soprano and being credible in her desire to start a new life with her lover. In the final scene Domingo unleashes all his reserves, conveying the madness of the deceived husband, who refuses to play the part of the clown any longer, while Cotrubas tries to resist him. A remarkable live first night. |
