Background: Brahms's Alto Rhapsody and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde share the same basic mood of nostalgia and valediction, a mood splendidly captured by Paul Kletzki. In both these works he is supported by the unique contralto voice of Oralia Dominguez. In Das Lied, her tenor colleague is Set Svanholm, who demonstrates that even towards the end of his career a heavy Wagnerian heldentenor need not lose his secure top notes and clear articulation.
