Background: This reissue of Bruckner's Eighth Symphony was the last occasion on which Keilberth conducted a work that he had performed regularly with various orchestras over a period of twenty-five years. As always, each bar shows Joseph Keilberth's responsibility towards a tradition that he saw as increasingly under threat during his final years of life. Joseph Keilberth is numbered among those conductors of the second third of the 20th century whose work is only now receiving the attention that it deserves, due mostly to the legendary opera performances that he conducted at the Bavarian State Opera and at the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals. |
