Background: This release of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony featuring the conductor Carlos Kleiber is exceptional in several respects. Kleiber only conducted this work once in this career on the 7th November 1983 and as a result this live recording is a genuine rarity.

The energy of Kleiber's reading creates a special musical atmosphere which is captured in this disc. Unlike all the other prominent conductors of the 1980s, Kleiber has taken Beethoven at his word: at the metronome markings in the full score. These are markings that clearly demand brisker tempos than we are used to hearing from classic accounts of the piece. The result is an astonishingly lilvely interpretation precisely because it is so unpretentious, and one, moreover, that seems literally to breathe the spirit of Beethoven.
