Background: This is a live recording of Bruckner's 'Symphony No.8' performed by the Bavarian State Orchestra under maestro Hans Knappertsbusch. This performance took place on the 5-Dec-1955 in the Congress Hall of German Museum in Munich. This performance is of particular interest as the symphony which Knappertsbusch conducts is not the usually performed original version. The conductor had become familiar with the retouched printed editions of Bruckner's music during his younger years. His successful performances of Bruckner's symphonies were due in no small part to the Wagner-like sound conceptions of the men who edited and revised Bruckner's work: Franz Schalk and Ferdinand Lowe.
