Background: Imagine Bach entering the hollowly echoing space of the Agnuskirche at Coethen on a rainy autumn afternoon. He stops in the middle of the deserted church, closes his eyes, limbers up his fingers, takes out his saxophone and begins to play, improvising for his own pleasure. As the bitter sweet, melancholy melody soars up, trails away and rises again, we feel he is conversing with God. Almost every element of this vision is absurd. Nevertheless the way Janos Vazonyi plays the Allemande movement of the Partita in A minor not only evokes the spirit of Bach, but also discloses a new, yet authentic trait of the musician we presume to know so well. |
