Background: This volume focuses on music inspired by Sibelius's fellow countryman, the poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson who was himself greatly inspired by ancient Norwegian heroic poetry. The best-known of the works on this disc is Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd the Crusader), incidental music for baritone, male choir and orchestra, which Grieg subsequently arranged as a popular instrumental suite. Based on a play set in the 12th Century, two movements from Grieg's incidental music have vocal settings of Bjornson's texts. Further Bjornson texts are interpreted by Hakan Hagegard in Landkjenning, which explores the life of Viking King Olav Trygvason, and Bergliot whose title role is performed by Norwegian actress Gorild Mauseth. |
