Background: Freddy Kempf, the previous BBC Young Musician of the Year can now be heard for the first time in SACD surround sound on this Hybrid disc. Composed at different stages in Chopin's life, the works are not merely studies but perfectly formed musical miniatures. The op.10 cycle shows Chopin's admiration for J S Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier with echoes of the first prelude in C major.

Although the Etudes are extremely demanding on technique (which perhaps explains their relatively infrequent performance), they are first and foremost musical statements that exhibit clear structures. Kempf adeptly conquers the technical demands and, having done this, allows his musicianship to shine through.
