Background: Composed between 1929 and 1937, these quartets employ various styles and techniques which epitimise their time of composition, an exciting era in 20th century music. With its inventive sonorities, and the focus on rhythm rather than melody, the short Quartet No.3 finds its inspiration from music of the non-European tradition. In the neo-classical Fourth Quartet, Martinu combines French mesure, Czech melodic invention and classical discipline to create a fascinating mixture of the styles that dominated Paris towards the end of the 1930s. Despite being one of the composer's most signficant chamber works, Martinu's String Quartet No.5 was not published until the last year of his life. This was perhaps because the inspiration for the work was Vitezslava Kapralova, a talented composer 25 years his junior, with whom Martinu had an affair. |
