Background: Fine examples of Bach's development of the Church Cantate, these three cantatas were composed for 'ordinary' Sundays in the liturgical year, the 11th, 13th and 16th Sundays after Trinity. They were composed in 1724, Bach's second year as Cantor of the Thomas Church in Leipzig, and demonstrate his desire to make use of the post-Reformation hymnbook in his liturgical works by illuminating various familiar hymns. Listening to the cantatas on this disc one again marvels at the fact that there are so many masterpieces that have remained little known and infrequently performed. |
