Background: The six trio sonatas are normally performed on the organ. They are claimed for the organ because, according to his first biographer, Bach compiled them for his oldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann who was learning to play the organ. These adaptions by London Baroque give us some wonderful music-making. For as Richard Gwilt, who made the adaptations and plays the viola in these performances, says in his informative notes: 'Almost all of Bach’s transcriptions, however perfect the original, shed new light on the material re-worked. It is my hope that these performances likewise reveal different perspectives in the wealth and wonder of these Sonatas.' Yet another disc to further enhance the reputation of the London Baroque! |
