Background: Ronald Brautigam's dramatic interpretations have been ideally suited to the exploratory nature of Haydn's keyboard works, and this work portrays the drama as well as any of Haydn's works for keyboard. Already well-known in its original format for orchestra as well as the transcription for string quartet, this keyboard arrangement was made immediately after the work's original publication. Although the arranger remains anonymous, Haydn corrected the proofs for publication and gave the arrangement his seal of approval. The seven instrumental adagios that make up this work were intended to be performed during the Good Friday liturgy, each movement a meditation on one of the Seven Last Words. |
