Background: Particularly in the field of the string quartet, the piano sonata and, indeed, the symphony Haydn's role as a visionary developer of musical forms cannot be valued too highly. With the later - and very much greater - piano sonatas ringing in our ears we are likely to be curious as to where the impulses came from. This disc, featuring 20 very early sonatas, helps us to trace the development of Haydn's thinking with regard to the piano sonata. Almost all of these sonatas were composed while Haydn was still in his teens or early twenties.
