Background: From the tentative opening bars through to the wonderfully cathartic climax, Rachmaninov's Symphon No.2 is perhaps the apotheosis of Russian Romanticism. This searing account features the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Owain Arwel Hughes. Listening to this wonderfully romantic symphony it is difficult to understand that Rachmaninov's first symphony was a disastrous flop. Although his second piano concerto had been an enormous success he still felt the need to re-establish himself and he subtitled the first movement of the new symphony 'Et resurrexit?'. |
