Background: For the most part written around 1875-1880, these songs – and in particular the Vinje songs – are the product of a difficult period of the composer’s life. During these years Grieg mourned the loss of his parents, went through a marital crisis and was plagued by serious doubts about his abilities as a composer. In fact he had not composed anything for two years when he discovered Vinje’s poetry in the spring of 1880. In the poems he found a resonance of his own thoughts concerning mankind, as well as the magical descriptions of Norwegian nature for which Vinje is justly celebrated. Mezzo-soprano Monica Groop is a most sympathetic interpreter of these works, and this time she is greatly assisted by Roger Vignoles, well-known both as accompanist and soloist, at the piano. |
