Background: It is fitting that this release focuses on works for piano and orchestra as Tviett was himself a piano virtuoso who often premiered his own works. This was the case with the Piano Concerto No.5 which was premiered by Tveitt in Paris in 1954, as well as the Variations which Tveitt premiered in 1938 with his future wife as the other pianist. The concerto has now become known as the Norwegian piano concerto after the Grieg A minor and both works are full of lyricism. As we would expect, folk music forms the basis for these stimulating works though the influence of Grieg, Sibelius, Ravel and Bartok is also present. Tveitt was noted for his collection and notation of over a thousand folk tunes from his native Hardanger in western Norway, and so it follows that a folk flavour is evident in his works. |
