Background: Richard Yardumian was born in America of Armenian parents and this heritage was to colour his musical output. Largely self-taught, the folk-songs that his parents would sing at home made a great impact on the composer as a child. Perhaps it is this influence, as well as the composer’s religious preoccupations, which has led some people to regard his music as 'old-fashioned'.
