Background: For an extended period Kajanus and Sibelius were considered to be the two leading musical figures in Finland. However, like most Finnish composers prior to Sibelius and several since, Kajanus was so overshadowd by the great master that his own music has disappeared from the concert platform. Today Kajanus is recognised almost exclusively as an inspirer and interpreter of Sibelius rather than a composer in his own right. Three of the works on this disc - the Finnish Rhapsody, Kullervo and Aino - originate from the 1880's a time when Sibelius was a young man and Kajanus was still considered to be the leading Finnish composer of the day. It was upon hearing Kajanus conduct Aino in Berlin that Sibelius was prompted to compose his Kullervo Symphony. Kajanus' works are noted for their nationalistic flavour, and it is this that the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vanska encapsulates so well in their performances here. |
