Background: Hummel was a composer who enjoyed prestigious musical links throughout his life with tuition and friendship from some of the great masters of the day. More than a simple re-allocation of melodic lines, Hummel entirely re-arranged Mozart's masterpieces and in doing so he exploited recent developments of the piano, which had undergone considerable changes since the original time of composition. The piano for which he made this arrangement had a wider tonal and dynamic range, the compass having been extended to a full seven octaves. Put quite simply, these arrangements could not have been played on Mozart's own piano. |

- Penguin Guide 3 star 'odd as it may seem to record such arrangements as these when there are so many recordings of these great concertos in their original form, these fine performances from Fumiko Shiraga, fresh and perceptive, give us important insights into performance practice in Mozart's time and after' |
