Background: The three works on this CD constitute Zino Francescatti's complete commercial recordings of Bach for the American Columbia label. Accompanied by the Cleveland Orchestra under the remarkable Hungarian conductor George Szell, the Concerto No.2 in E from 1953 is conceived on a grand scale with full orchestral forces. The Partitas No.2 and No.3 were the only unaccompanied violin works of Bach that Francescatti ever recorded. Francescatti exploits the rich sonorities of the upper positions and employs expressive portamenti throughout these solo works, and this 'old-fashioned' approach allows for a breathtaking display of his vibrant sound, immaculate technique, and unerring musical taste.
