Background: Mischa Elman's interpretations of the baroque masterpieces by Bach and Handel display a 'romantic' style which may be considered unfashionable today. He pays close attention to the beauty of sound and he lingers on every phrase, yet his performances fully reveal the expressive capabilities of the violin. His interpretations of the Handel violin sonatas, in particular, are distinctive. Elman often opened his recital programmes with one of them, and his heartfelt interpretations eloquently convey the grandeur and nobility so characteristic of Handel's music. |
