Background: BIPED is the most successful and immediately attractive of all the scores commissioned by the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham. It opened in Berkeley in 1999 and has since been performed all over the world to huge popular and critical acclaim.

Bryars and Cunningham followed the method of working independently but towards a common goal, just as he had with John Cage, avoiding any planned one-to-one relationship between music, dance and décor.
