Background: This Gennadi Rozhdestvensky release is very important because it features the first performances in the West of Shostokovich's Symphony No.4 and his Suite Katerina Ismailova. The concert was attended by the composer given in 1962 in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh. There is short fill-up of Shostakovich's popular Festive Overture, stunningly played by the London Symphony Orchestra from the Barbican in July 1985. |
