Background: Carlo Maria Giulini, the last of the great and most revered Italian maestros, celebrates his 90th birthday in May 2004. This is the first of two discs released to celebrate Giulini's birthday. The Weber overture and the extremely rare Britten work were never recorded by Giulini and are therefore new additions to his discography. Giulini recorded the Schubert Symphony No.9 in the studio for DG, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1977 and again for Sony with Bayerischen Rundfunk in 1993. However the version presented here from 1975 demonstrates Giulini's magic caught live, a situation he much preferred to studio conditions. CATALOGUE NR: BBCL41402 |
