Background: Philippe Calvario made his debut as a theatre director after 10 years acting at the Comédie Française. His direction of The Love of the Three Oranges was his first opera staging. With admirable dash and panache, he moves his forces, very often to hilarious effect. The cheap stage constructions and the candy-coloured costumes fit perfectly with his slapstick approach. The sometimes sharp, burlesque music of Prokofiev invites an over-the-top approach. Stunning!
