Background: The French speak of 'Ingres' violin' to refer to a hobby or a second occupation. In the trunk of personal archives he left to his native city, among thousands of sketches and preliminary studies for his paintings, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres deliberately placed an old and much-used 7/8ths practice violin, the instrument on which he shared his life's second passion with musician friends. He played second violin in the Orchestre du Capitole, which helped pay for his tuition at the School of Fine Art in Toulouse, and he painted the portraits of musicians including Gounod, Liszt and Cherubini. The film invites us to share the life of the man and the artist by following the many threads he wove between his painting and his music. |
