Background: The late lamented pianist who died in 1983 from Aids was one of the foremost exponents of 20th Century music. A close associate of Elliott Carter, he knew Stravinsky, was among the first to record Schoenberg's complete piano music and was an eminent scholar. Texts by Jacobs and a tribute by his legendary producer Teresa Sterne are contained in the extensive liner notes. These recordings (by Nonesuch in 1976-79) have been restored from the original master tapes and yield sounds that surpass their LP incarnations in their first appearance on CD.
