Background: The legendary Busoni pupil Leo Sirota spent seventeen years in Tokyo (1929-1946) as Japan's leading pianist, performer and educator. After wartime internment, he settled in the United States. In 1963, the 78-year-old master pianist was urged to return once more to Japan by his pupils. Sirota's farewell Tokyo recital was recorded (the only solo recital of his extant). Arbiter presents the first half, along with a Liszt programme recorded in 1955 in St Louis: his performance of the formidable Don Juan Fantasy is perhaps unequalled.
