Background: This APR CD captures Solomon in two concerto performances from 1952. These two concertos were the cornerstone of Solomon's orchestral repertoire, both of which he recorded twice in the studio. But these live performances place his great art in a very different perspective. Obviously a pianist who very much reacts to his conductor partners, we have here a gloriously lyrical yet playful Beethoven Third Concerto while, perhaps for the first time on record, we hear Solomon in full-blooded virtuoso mode in the Tchaikovsky First Concerto. This Tchaikovsky recording is being published for the first time: the Beethoven has appeared only as part of a limited-edition boxed set and can be heard here in far superior sound. |
