More by:

Composer:
Gustav Mahler

Artist(s):
Kathleen Ferrier
Richard Lewis

Conductor:
John Barbirolli

Background: This rare excursion by APR into vocal territory offers two previously unpublished live recordings of Kathleen Ferrier. Released to mark the fiftieth anniversary of her premature death it is difficult to imagine a more significant, or poignant, souvenir of this much-loved artist.

Miraculously a tape has been discovered of a 1952 broadcast of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. True, the first seven bars are missing and it required hours of restorative work but that is a small price to pay when the musicians involved are the 'dream team' from that era - Kathleen Ferrier, Richard Lewis and John Barbirolli with his beloved Hallé Orchestra.

At that time the Hallé was an indisputably great orchestra: the playing of the principals is superb and the ensemble's response to its conductor's inspired demands frequently breathtaking. As for Ferrier, she dares more expressiveness, more abandon with Barbirolli than in her classic Decca recording (recorded less than a month later) while Richard Lewis' heroic voice rides the full might of the orchestra with effortless ease.

The programme is completed by a 1949 Oslo performance of Brahms's Alto Rhapsody. As fine as Ferrier's Decca recording is, this Oslo performance has its own very special merits, not least Ferrier in seraphic voice and an unusually taut and dramatic accompaniment by Erik Tuxen.
