Background: This Ronald Smith offering from APR is a Schubert celebration. The programme opens with the mighty Wanderer Fantasy, recorded in the superb acoustic of St. George's, Bristol shortly after the pianist's eightieth birthday. This interpretation would be a staggering achievement for a pianist half his age. Smith's characteristically incisive playing here being allied to a rare fusion of drama and poetry. The two A minor Sonatas (D537 & D784) were recorded for Nimbus in 1986 and are here being released for the first time. They make a rewarding pair, the earlier lyrical sonata offset by the darker, more troubled later work. Both benefit from Ronald Smith's imaginative, unsentimental approach. |
